Nobody has a feel for what 50 square feet looks like. Storage companies price in square feet anyway. That mismatch is how people end up paying for space they never fill, or hiring a van twice. Here’s the translation table.
The anchor to hold onto: a 10ft shipping container is about the size of a small garage or big garden shed, and takes a one-bed flat’s entire contents. Everything else scales from there.
How storage sizes actually work
Units are priced on floor area. Height is standard-ish (containers around 8ft, indoor units similar), so the skill isn’t buying more floor. It’s using the air above it. Stack strong boxes to shoulder height and a unit holds half as much again as its floor plan suggests.
Real anchors people know: a transit van load works out at roughly 25 sq ft once it’s stacked, a single garage is about 108 sq ft, and your bathroom is probably 40 sq ft.

Reading that as homes rather than numbers:
| If you’re storing… | You likely need |
|---|---|
| A student room or one room’s furniture | Shared 10ft container (split it: see student storage) |
| A one-bed flat, everything | 10ft container / 90 sq ft internal |
| A two-bed flat or selective house contents | 96 sq ft internal / 20ft container |
| A 2-bed house, everything | 108 sq ft (single-garage size) |
| A large 2-bed or small 3-bed house, everything | 135 sq ft |

For Teesside context: a typical terraced house in Redcar and Cleveland costs around £119,000. Everything inside one fits into a 108 sq ft unit. Store only what you’re actually keeping and you’ll need far less.
How to estimate your own load
The van-load method beats guessing. Walk each room and count transit-van loads (a van load ≈ 25 sq ft stacked). Most people’s mental inventory misses the loft, the shed and the garage, so walk those too.
Then knock a third off for everything you’ll decide not to keep once it’s actually in your hands. That purge is worth real money: our decluttering guide has the method.
The three classic sizing mistakes
- Renting for the pile, not the stack. Loose furniture eats floor; dismantled and stacked, it doesn’t. Take beds apart, stand sofas on end.
- Paying for air “just in case”. Start one size down and change later. Changing size online takes minutes; over-renting for six months costs real money.
- Packing with no walkway. If you’ll visit the unit (seasonal kit, business stock), leave a spine down the middle. If you’ll never visit until move-out, pack it solid.

Square feet on a screen is one thing. Standing in the doorway is another. Call in at Redcar or Ingleby Barwick and we’ll show you the sizes empty. You’ll know yours on sight, and we’d rather right-size you than upsell you.
