Moving house runs on a hundred small deadlines, and every guide online gives you the same national list. This one adds the part that actually trips people up locally: the Teesside admin, plus a plan for the week the dates don’t line up.
8 weeks out: the big decisions
Confirm your date first. Avoid Fridays and month-end if you can; that’s when every chain in Teesside completes. Then book the removal firm or van and start the declutter.
Every box you don’t move is money saved. The room-by-room method is here, and doing it now, not moving week, is the whole trick.
4 weeks out: who to tell
| Who | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Your council | Council tax: close old, open new | middlesbrough.gov.uk · redcar-cleveland.gov.uk · stockton.gov.uk (each has an online “moving home” form) |
| DVLA | Driving licence + vehicle log book | gov.uk/change-address-dvla |
| Electoral register | Re-register at the new address | gov.uk/register-to-vote |
| GP & dentist | Transfer or update address | Your practice |
| Utilities & broadband | Close or switch (broadband lead times can be 2+ weeks) | Your providers |
| Bank, insurers, pensions | Address updates; home insurance must cover the new house from exchange/move day | Your providers |
| Royal Mail | Redirection catches everyone you forgot | royalmail.com (allow a week to activate) |
Core list per GOV.UK moving-home guidance; council links verified to domain level, July 2026.
Moving between Teesside boroughs? You’ll do the council step twice: a close with one, an open with the other. Both forms take minutes online. The fine for quietly not paying at the new address takes longer to sort out.
2 weeks out: pack like you mean it
Room by room, heavy things in small boxes, light in large. Label every box with room + contents, not just “stuff”. Photograph the backs of the TV and router before unplugging.
Keep a one-page inventory. If a box goes missing you’ll know which one, not just how many. Anything headed for storage rather than the new house, pack to storage standard: clean, dry, wrapped against damp.
Moving week: the survival plan
- The essentials box rides in the car (see FAQ below for the packing list).
- Kids and pets do moving day somewhere else if you can arrange it. Grandparents earn their keep today.
- Meter readings, photographed, both houses, day of.
- One walk-through of the empty house. Lofts, sheds and the cupboard over the stairs are where things get left.
- Keys plan: know exactly who hands over what, and when.
When the dates don’t line up
The most common Teesside moving problem isn’t the van. It’s the calendar. Completion slips a fortnight; the rental ends before the purchase completes; the renovation isn’t done.
The fix is boring and effective: put the house in storage, put yourselves somewhere small, and stop paying two sets of pressure. Flexible monthly units at iBOXED start at £90 a month, off the A19 at Ingleby Barwick and in Redcar. If the chain surprises you, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before move-in.
