If you sell on Amazon FBA and your inventory has taken over the house, or you’re watching per-item prep-centre fees eat the margin, a storage unit is the obvious next step. This is the honest guide to doing it from Stockton: what’s involved, what the rules actually allow, and where the money lands versus paying someone else to prep.

The short version. Holding and staging FBA stock in a unit is simple and cheap, especially here, where storage in the North runs at about £21.65 per square foot against £27.40 nationally. The prep work (labelling, poly-bagging, boxing) is where the rules and the maths need care, so this guide takes each in turn.

What FBA prep actually involves

Before inventory reaches an Amazon fulfilment centre it has to meet Amazon’s requirements: correct FNSKU labelling, poly-bagging where required, suffocation warnings, bundling and box-content rules, and shipment limits. These are set by Amazon and change periodically, so the authoritative source is always your Seller Central account rather than any blog. Check the current requirements there before you set up a process.

Can you prep from a storage unit?

Storing and staging inventory in a unit: yes, that’s ordinary business storage, secure with 24-hour CCTV and access control. Doing the physical prep inside the unit (a bench, a label printer, packing at volume, drawing power) is a site-rules question, not a given.

We won’t promise what a site can’t confirm. If prep-in-unit isn’t permitted, the honest model is “store and stage from the unit, prep at home or a bench elsewhere”, which is still a big step up from drowning in stock.

The cost crossover: unit versus prep centre

The logic is simple even before the exact figures: a storage unit is a fixed monthly cost, a third-party prep centre is a per-item cost. So self-prep from a unit wins once your monthly volume is high enough, and a prep centre wins when volumes are low or lumpy. As a guide, a 20ft container, the one size iBOXED offers at all three of its Teesside sites, is £118.80 a month including VAT. That’s about the floor space of a single garage.

What does a prep centre charge? Three UK centres publish their prices. For a full prep (receiving and inspection, an FNSKU label and a poly bag) the per-item cost in September 2026 ran from about 50p to 80p excluding VAT depending on the centre and your monthly volume, which is roughly 60p to 96p including VAT. One centre also charges a monthly fee of £40 to £50 on its cheaper per-item tiers. Storage at a prep centre is extra, typically £20 a cubic metre a month or £1.50 a pallet a day.

Put that against the unit and the picture is clear:

Items prepped a month Prep centre (60p to 96p an item, inc VAT) 20ft container (inc VAT)
100 £60 to £96 £118.80
250 £150 to £240 £118.80
500 £300 to £480 £118.80
1,000 £600 to £960 £118.80

So the break-even is somewhere between about 125 and 200 items a month. Below that, pay the prep centre and keep the house tidy some other way. Above it, the unit pays for itself, and the gap widens fast: at 1,000 items a month a prep centre bill is five to eight times the container. Two honest adjustments before you decide. Self-prep costs your own time and packaging (bags, labels, a printer), which the table leaves out. And the unit gives you the storage space as well as somewhere to do the job, which a prep centre charges for separately.

Logistics from Preston Farm and Stockton

The location argument for Stockton is the road network: the A19 and A66 meet at Preston Farm, where the iBOXED Stockton site opened in September 2026 (Surtees Business Park, Bowesfield Lane, TS18 3HR). That’s quick access for carrier drop-offs and depot runs. Ingleby Barwick on Low Lane is the alternative inside the borough; all three iBOXED sites are pinned on the map below.

Can you store Amazon FBA inventory in a storage unit?
Yes. Holding and staging inventory in a self-storage unit is straightforward, and it’s a common step up from burying the house in stock. Whether you can also do the prep work (labelling, poly-bagging) inside the unit depends on the site’s rules; see below.
Is a storage unit cheaper than a prep centre?
It depends on your monthly volume. A unit is a fixed monthly cost and a prep centre charges per item, so a prep centre is cheaper at low volumes and a unit wins once you are past a few hundred items a month. Published UK prep-centre prices for a full prep (receive, label, poly bag) run from about 60p to 96p an item including VAT, so against a 20ft container at £118.80 a month the break-even sits somewhere between about 125 and 200 items a month, before your own time and packaging.
